On Alternative Facts, and Alternative Realities.

Hello, my friends. Today, on the 22nd day of the first month in the Year of our Lord 2017, we have arrived, inexorably and unwillingly, in a post-truth world. A world where there are no truths and no lies, but merely facts and “alternative facts”. You see, in a world full of alternative facts, falsehoods cease to exist. We have arrived in that place where those in power tell us that what we see with our own eyes does not, in fact, exist. That monstrous propaganda machine that has toppled societies across the globe has reached our shores, and it is here to tell us that what we know to be true is false. Though we can see it, hear it, touch it, taste it, remember it with the full confidence of our being, it isn’t true, because our government has declared it false.

Oh! I’m sorry, not false — merely ‘alternative fact’.

This is Newspeak at its finest. This is Doublethink. These are the tools of totalitarian and fascist regimes and they are making their way, slowly and steadily, through the ranks of our government with little fanfare, and a startling lack of alarm from the general public.

‘But S!” you say, “You’re being paranoid! You’re delusional! He hasn’t done anything yet. Give him a chance!”

The thing is, I’ve given him a chance. We’ve all given him a plethora of chances, and lo! He lies. He lies and he lies and he lies. He lies when we have video evidence contradicting him. He lies when scientists and journalists and academics confront him immediately with the truth. He lies even when he knows he can be proven wrong. He lies because it doesn’t matter. In a world with only facts and their alternatives, who’s to say that 2 + 2 doesn’t equal 5?

He lies because those with whom he has surrounded himself lie with him. With a groundswell of voices declaring that up is down, and down is up, how does the common man stand and declare: ‘you are wrong, for we know the truth?’

If you feel like being disheartened, check out some of the comments on the above video. They do not fixate on the lies, the blatant falsehoods and deceit. They call Trump ‘the everyman’; they declare him ‘honest’. They claim that he ‘tells it like it is’, and that the ‘libtards are crying snowflake tears’.

Don’t get me wrong — I welcome discourse. Feel free to disagree with me. Feel free to counter my evidence — my video clips and federal studies and peer-reviewed journals and international media excerpts —  with some evidence of your own. But please don’t sit here and tell me that up is down and down is up because of my special snowflake feelings. My feelings don’t make the truth real. Facts make the truth real. Science is real. The words that you say don’t disappear into the ether Mr. Spicer. Nor do they disappear for you, President Trump: not in this age of digital footprints that follow you to the ends of the earth. I do not care how often you tell me that the truth is a lie and your lies are the truth. As George Orwell taught me, I cannot help but see the truth in front of my own eyes. Two and two are four.

For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable—what then?

In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it. It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it. Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality was tacitly denied by their philosophy.

— George Orwell, 1984

Friends, we can do better. We can see the truth with our own eyes. This life, it’s no dystopian novel. It’s ours, and it’s real. See the truth. Share it. 2 + 2 = 4. Climate change is real. Donald Trump mocked a disabled reporter. Sean Spicer lied about attendance at the inauguration. I will not heed when they tell me that up now means down, and down now means up. Neither should you. We are in this together.
